Dollar Insights is a personal finance app made by AI Insight Labs. We built it with one core belief: your financial data belongs to you, and only you. This page explains how that works in practice.
What does Dollar Insights actually access?
When you connect your Google account, Dollar Insights opens Google's own file picker so you can choose the specific Tiller spreadsheet you want to analyze. We only ever receive access to the individual file you pick — never your whole Google Drive — and we only read it. We never change, edit, or delete anything in it.
The data you bring in typically includes things like transaction dates, descriptions, amounts, categories, and account balances — the same stuff you see in your Tiller spreadsheet.
How Dollar Insights Handles Google User Data
Dollar Insights' use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Data Accessed
Dollar Insights requests the following Google API access:
Per-file Google Drive access (drive.file scope): Using Google's own file picker, you select the specific Tiller spreadsheet you want to analyze. This scope grants Dollar Insights access only to the individual file(s) you explicitly choose — never your entire Google Drive, and never any file you do not select. Although the drive.file scope technically permits editing the files you open with it, Dollar Insights only ever reads your selected spreadsheet: we pull cell values from the Transactions, Categories, and Balance History tabs. Specific data fields include transaction dates, descriptions, amounts, categories, account names, institution names, and account balances. We never create, edit, or delete any data in your spreadsheet.
Email address (userinfo.email scope): We access your Google account email address only to display which account is connected within the app and to tell Google which account to use when you reconnect or disconnect. We do not use your email for marketing, communications, or any other purpose.
Data Usage
Google user data is used exclusively to generate personal financial visualizations, charts, budgets, spending analysis, and planning tools within your browser. All processing happens locally on your device using Web Workers — your data is never transmitted to any external server, API, or cloud service. We do not use Google user data for advertising, marketing, analytics, AI/ML model training, or any purpose other than providing you with financial insights about your own data. The "AI recommended" spending patterns on the Budgeting page are worked out the same way: in your browser, from your own history, with nothing sent to an AI service.
Data Sharing
Dollar Insights does not share Google user data with any third party. This includes advertisers, analytics providers, data brokers, AI/ML services, affiliates, or any other external entity. Your Google data stays in your browser and is never transmitted anywhere.
Data Storage & Protection
All Google user data is stored exclusively in IndexedDB within your web browser on your device. Your OAuth access token is held in browser memory for the duration of your session. Dollar Insights has no servers or databases that store your financial data — there is no server-side copy of your transactions, balances, or spreadsheet. Your data is protected by your browser's built-in origin isolation and same-origin security policies, meaning no other website can access it.
Data Retention & Deletion
Disconnecting vs. deleting: The Disconnect button forgets which Google Sheet you connected and removes Dollar Insights' access to your Google account. Your imported data stays in your browser until you use Clear imported data or Reset everything.
Your Google user data persists in your browser's IndexedDB until you choose to delete it. You can delete all data at any time by:
1. Using the "Clear imported data" button on the Data page inside Dollar Insights — this instantly and permanently removes all stored transactions, balances, and import history. (Your categories and budgets stay.) The "Reset everything" button on the same page also removes your categories, budgets and budget settings.
2. Clearing your browser's site data for dollarinsights.net through your browser settings.
3. Revoking Dollar Insights' access from your Google Account permissions page, which immediately invalidates the OAuth token and prevents any further data access.
Because Dollar Insights never stores your financial data on a server, there is no server-side copy to retain or delete. We cannot access your data after you clear it because we never had a copy.
Where does my data go?
Nowhere. Seriously.
Your data is stored in something called IndexedDB — it's a small database built into your web browser. Think of it like a filing cabinet that lives inside Chrome (or whatever browser you use). It never gets sent to us, uploaded to the cloud, or shared with anyone.
All the charts, summaries, and analytics you see? Those are calculated right on your computer, in the background, using something called Web Workers. It's like having a tiny analyst working inside your browser — no internet connection needed once your data is loaded.
Our promises to you
How does the Google sign-in work?
When you click "Connect Google Sheets," you're taken to Google's own sign-in page. Google asks if you want to let Dollar Insights access the specific file you selected. If you say yes, Google sends us a temporary pass (called a token) that lets us read that one sheet. That token is stored in your browser — not on our servers.
Want to disconnect?
1. Click "Disconnect" inside Dollar Insights. It forgets your sheet and removes Dollar Insights' Google access (your imported data stays until you use Clear imported data or Reset everything).
2. To double-check, visit your Google Account permissions page: Dollar Insights should no longer be listed. If it is, remove it there.
We follow Google's rules for handling your data, including their User Data Policy.
How do I delete my data?
Since your data lives in your browser, you're in complete control:
Inside the app: Go to the Data page and use the "Clear imported data" button. Your imported transactions, balances, and import history are wiped instantly. (Your categories and budgets stay.) To remove those too, use "Reset everything" on the same page, or clear your browser's site data.
Browser settings: Clear your browser's site data for Dollar Insights and it's all gone.
Switch devices or browsers: Your data doesn't follow you because it was never stored anywhere else. If you open Dollar Insights on a different computer, it starts fresh.
We can't delete your data for you because we never had it in the first place.
What about payments?
Your subscription is handled by Stripe, a trusted payment processor used by millions of businesses. We never see your full credit card number. Stripe keeps that information safe on their end — you can read their Privacy Policy for details.
If you use Restore access on a new browser, we send the email address you type to Stripe to find your subscription, then email you a one-time link through Resend, our email delivery service. Resend also sends us a notice with your email address if your subscription is canceled or a payment fails, and sends you one email confirming the date your access ends when you cancel. To prevent abuse, we keep a scrambled (hashed) copy of your IP address when you subscribe, restore or renew access, and of the email you type for Restore access. The scrambling uses a secret key, so those copies cannot be matched back to you, and we delete them after 30 days.
If you apply for the Founding 10 beta, the form sends your name, email, how long you have used Tiller and, if you choose one, the area that interests you most to Netlify, which hosts this site, and Netlify emails it to us. We also email you a receipt through Resend, our email delivery service, which receives your name and email. To stop the form being used to flood inboxes, we keep a scrambled (hashed) copy of your email for 30 days, then delete it. Netlify also records your IP address and browser type with the form. We use it only for the beta: to reply to you and, if you're picked, to set up your free access in Stripe. We delete applications after the beta. The form never asks for financial data.
If you send feedback from our Friends & Family invitation page, the form sends your answers, and your first name and email if you choose to add them, to Netlify, which emails them to us. If you add your email, we send you a receipt through Resend, which receives your first name and email, and we keep a scrambled copy of your email for 30 days, then delete it. Netlify also records your IP address and browser type with the form. We use your feedback only to improve Dollar Insights, and your email only to reply to you. We delete feedback after launch. The form never asks for financial data.
Who else sees my visit?
Like any website, two services see the visit itself, never your financial data: Netlify, which hosts this site, keeps standard visit logs (your IP address, browser type and the pages you open), and the charts load from Cloudflare's cdnjs library service, which sees your IP address when it sends the chart code.
Do you use cookies?
No tracking cookies, no advertising cookies, no analytics cookies. Your financial data and settings (your accounts, categories, budgets and which tab you were on last) are stored in your browser, in IndexedDB and localStorage. They stay on this device.
Is this app for kids?
No. Dollar Insights is designed for adults managing their personal finances. You must be at least 18 to use it.
Will this policy change?
We might update it occasionally. If we make any big changes, we'll post the updated version here with a new date at the top. If you keep using Dollar Insights after a change, that means you're okay with the update.
